In the war-torn fall of 1944, tens of thousands of Estonians and Latvians risked their lives to cross the stormy Baltic Sea to Sweden as Soviet forces moved to overtake their homeland. Many of the boat refugees were children whose childhood idyll was suddenly interrupted when their families undertook the perilous and uncertain journey.
Eight year old Keete’s beloved teddy bear Päts is lost in the waves, but by a small miracle she finds him again. Finally they reach the shores of Sweden where they are greeted with hot chocolate, disinfectant baths, and a yearning for the homes they left behind...
The Moon Is Like a Golden Ship is a tribute to all the children who lost their lives on the voyage to freedom.
