Erich Maria Remarque (1898–1970) was a German-born author whose works are considered among the most important of 20th-century world literature. His writing focuses primarily on the impact of the First and Second World Wars—the absurdity of war, the trauma it causes, the losses it brings, and the collapse of humanity. Remarque’s novels are deeply humanistic, offering readers an intimate look into the inner worlds of soldiers and ordinary people affected by war.
His most famous novel, “All Quiet on the Western Front” (Im Westen nichts Neues), published in 1929, shocked the public with its honest and brutal portrayal of the soldier’s experience during World War I. It quickly became an international bestseller and remains one of the most powerful anti-war novels ever written.
Remarque’s other notable works include “The Road Back”, “A Time to Love and a Time to Die”, “Arch of Triumph”, “The Night in Lisbon”, and many more. These books explore themes such as exile, love in times of despair, and the struggle for dignity and freedom.
Remarque’s writing is timeless, moving, and thought-provoking, reminding us of the immense cost of war and the importance of preserving our humanity, even in the darkest of times.
