This 1966 text investigates the reasons why Victorian pioneers of social science were habitually approaching the study of other societies with largely positivistic and evolutionary methodologies. He also seeks to contextualise these ideas, which are often anachronistically classified as Darwinist within the studies of other leading Victorian scientists.
